The Reed at Southbank, Chicago, IL

As the first high-rise in Chicago to incorporate low carbon concrete, The Reed at Southbank set a bold new standard in sustainable construction—and Oremus Material was proud to be part of the team that made it happen.

Our specially formulated low carbon concrete mix delivered a carbon reduction of over 3.2 million kg CO₂ compared to NRMCA benchmarks, and 1.1 million kg CO₂ below the Owner’s own sustainability targets. Despite the complex requirements of this high-rise application, our mix maintained excellent workability, achieved target set times, and exceeded compressive strength requirements.

With a 26–28″ spread at the point of discharge, the concrete remained highly workable and pumpable—reaching up to 41 stories with no issues. Crews were able to access and finish the surface within 2 hours and were completely off the pour just 4 hours later. Strength performance exceeded expectations, hitting 3,000 PSI in just 18 hours, and delivering consistent results at 6K, 8K, and 10K strength levels—all while maintaining an aggressive low-carbon profile.

Low carbon. High performance. Game-changing results.
